How tips are split

The tip is simply the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. The total adds the tip to the original bill. When more than one person is paying, both the tip and the total are divided evenly.

This calculator assumes everyone pays an equal share. If one person is covering more, you can adjust the number of payers or re-enter a smaller bill for each share.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

A common tip in the United States is 18–20% of the pre-tax bill for good service. For quick counter service, a smaller percentage or rounding up is typical.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on tax is fine too, but it is not the convention in most places.

What happens if I round the total instead of the percentage?

Rounding the total up to a convenient number is perfectly acceptable. The calculator shows the exact percentage first, so you can decide what total feels right.

Does the calculator include tax?

No. Enter the bill amount you want to tip on — usually the food and drink subtotal before tax and fees.
