How the projection works

The calculator compounds your existing savings month by month at the return you enter and adds each contribution as it is made. At your retirement age it applies your withdrawal rate to the balance to estimate a sustainable first-year income.

Two levers dominate the outcome: how much you contribute and how many years the money compounds. Because the earliest contributions have the longest to grow, starting five years sooner typically beats contributing more later.

This is a smooth projection, not a simulation of real markets. Actual returns arrive unevenly, and a bad sequence early in retirement is riskier than the same average return arriving in a different order. Treat the figure as a planning direction, and revisit it yearly.

Frequently asked questions

What withdrawal rate should I assume?

4% of the starting balance a year is the common planning benchmark for a roughly 30-year retirement. Longer retirements or cautious plans often use 3% to 3.5%.

Does this include an employer match?

Add the match to your monthly contribution. It is the highest-return money in most retirement plans, so leaving it out understates the projection significantly.

Is the result in today's money?

It is nominal. To think in today's purchasing power, enter a real return — your expected return minus expected inflation, often around 4% to 5%.

Does it include social security or a pension?

No. Those are separate income streams. Estimate them independently and subtract them from the income you need this pot to produce.
